Breastfeeding in Hot Weather: What Every Parent Needs to Know
By Penny Henderson – Chiropractor, Breastfeeding Coach & Baby Bodyworker
When the sun is out and temperatures rise, it’s only natural to reach for more water yourself, and your breastfed baby may do just the same. During warmer weather, many babies want to breastfeed more frequently, often enjoying shorter but more frequent feeds. During this lovely sunny summer one of the most frequently asked questions is "Is my breastmilk enough in hot weather?".
Is breastmilk enough in hot weather?
Yes! Breastmilk is the perfect hydration solution for your baby. In fact, your milk naturally adapts to the needs of your baby and becomes more hydrating and refreshing during hot weather. For babies under 6 months old, breastmilk is all they need, even in the heat.
There is no need to offer cooled boiled water for breastfed babies under 6 months. While it might seem helpful, offering water in place of a breastfeed can reduce calorie intake and affect your baby's growth. Breastmilk not only quenches thirst but also continues to provide the essential fats, nutrients, and antibodies your baby needs to develop and thrive.
Why babies feed more often when it’s hot
Feeding more frequently is completely normal in warm weather. These shorter, more regular feeds are your baby’s natural way of staying cool and hydrated. This is known as responsive feeding , tuning into your baby’s cues and allowing them to feed when they want to, rather than following a schedule.
As a breastfeeding coach and chiropractor who specialises in newborn feeding issues, I always remind new parents that increased feeding doesn't always mean baby is hungry, sometimes they’re just thirsty or seeking comfort.
What about babies over 6 months?
Once your baby reaches 6 months and starts eating solid food, you can begin offering sips of water with meals, ideally in a cup. Between feeds, small amounts of water are okay, but don’t overdo it, your baby’s kidneys are still developing.
Worried about feeding in the heat? Let me help.
If your baby is unsettled, feeding very frequently, or you’re worried about latch, comfort, or supply, I can help. My breastfeeding support visits include gentle chiropractic care and craniosacral techniques for babies who may be unsettled or struggling with tension, side preference, tongue tie concerns. These issues can be more noticeable in the heat when babies feed more often.
