World Breastfeeding Week is a moment to celebrate something I feel deeply passionate about: the difference that timely, evidence based, non judgmental support can make to a family's feeding journey. Whether you are pregnant and wondering what to expect, or you are a new mum navigating those intense early days, this post is for you.
Why Breastfeeding Support Should Begin Before Birth
One of the most consistent findings in infant feeding research is that preparation matters. Families who receive clear, evidence-based information about breastfeeding during pregnancy are better equipped to navigate the early days after birth not because breastfeeding becomes effortless, but because they understand what is normal, what to expect, and where to turn if they need help.
In Jersey, expectant parents have access to some excellent antenatal resources. Programmes such as Baby Steps Perinatal Education, antenatal contact with Health Visitors, and Jersey's maternity services all provide opportunities to learn about infant feeding, ask questions, and begin building confidence before your baby arrives. I'd encourage every expectant parent to take full advantage of these.
Alongside these services, a one to one antenatal breastfeeding consultation, a "power hour" appointment, available in clinic or by video call, can be a valuable addition. We cover what to expect in the first hours and days, how to recognise feeding cues, positioning and attachment, and how to protect your milk supply from the very beginning. Many mums tell me this one session changed everything about how prepared they felt.
What Effective Postnatal Support Looks Like
After birth, the quality and timeliness of support you receive can make a profound difference. Skilled, practical help with positioning and attachment, recognising when your baby is feeding effectively, understanding feeding cues, and navigating common challenges like sore nipples, engorgement, or a unsettled baby are not things most new mothers should be expected to work out alone.
In Jersey, midwives and health visitors play a vital role in those early days, and I work alongside these professionals as part of a wider network of infant feeding support available on the island. Where there are additional challenges, such as a baby with tension affecting their latch, asymmetric feeding, or a mum whose confidence has taken a knock, I offer home visits across Jersey, so that support comes to you at a time that works for your family.
The Role of the Whole Body in Breastfeeding
Something that sets my practice apart is the integration of chiropractic care with breastfeeding support. Breastfeeding is a physical act, for both mother and baby, and tension, restriction, or discomfort in either can affect the feeding relationship. As a McTimoney chiropractor with a special interest in newborn care, I am able to assess and gently treat postural restrictions in babies that may be contributing to latch difficulties, preference for one side, or unsettled feeding behaviour as part of the same appointment.
This joined up approach is one of the reasons I am recommended by midwives, health visitors across Jersey.
You Don't Have to Wait Until Something Goes Wrong
One of the things I hear most often from the mums I support is: "I wish I'd reached out sooner." Breastfeeding support is not only for when things are difficult, it can be just as valuable as a confidence check, a reassurance that things are going well, or as preparation before your baby even arrives.
If you are pregnant and want to feel better prepared, or if you are a new mum in Jersey who would benefit from support, I would love to hear from you.
I offer antenatal power hour consultations by video or in clinic, and postnatal home visits across the island.
