Keep your newborn close (chest-to-chest!), it helps them feel calm and regulate their needs. This "relaxed nursing" can also lead to gentler latching and happier nips! Let your baby take the lead, follow their cues instead of forcing positions.

 

Already Badly Engorged?

Increase nursing frequency: Nurse or express milk at least every 2 hours, including twice at night. This helps keep fluids moving and prevent further congestion.

 

Positioning:

Try lying back or reclining to aid drainage with gravity's help.

 

Skin-to-skin contact:

Keep your baby close to you. Body contact can stimulate nursing and help relieve engorgement.

 

Warm shower:

Take a warm shower and let the water flow on your back, the front is likely to painful The warmth may encourage leaking and provide relief.

 

Massage:

Gently massage your breasts to help move fluids and encourage milk let-down.

 

Cold compress:

Apply a cold compress, like a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel, for 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling. Take breaks in between to avoid numbing the tissue.

 

Cabbage leaves:

(Note: While this is an old remedy, there's no scientific evidence to support its effectiveness) Place chilled cabbage leaves inside your bra for potential relief.
