One of the most common concerns I hear from new mums is: “How do I know if my baby is getting enough breast milk?” Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your family, it’s completely normal to wonder if your baby is feeding well.

As an experienced breastfeeding coach in Jersey and gentle McTimoney chiropractor for babies, I help parents every week who are unsure about their baby’s feeding. Below are some key signs to look for and when to seek extra help.

Signs Your Baby is Getting Enough Milk

  • Regular wet and dirty nappies – These are a great indicator that your baby is feeding well. By day 5, your baby should have at least 5–6 wet nappies and soft yellow stools each day. After day 7 at least several yellow mustard type poos a day and a good 5-8 wet heavy nappies.
  • Steady weight gain – Whilst it is normal to experience some  weight loses ( 7-10% of their birth weight), most babies gain this lost weight by days 10-14 of life. I advise mums to offer both breasts at each feed, although the time baby spends at the second breast will vary.
  • Content between feeds – While some cluster feeding is normal, your baby should have periods of calm and sleep between feeds.
  • Rhythmic feeding – You’ll notice a deep, slow suck-swallow-breathe pattern during feeds
  • Cluster feeding – common during the evenings and night

When to Seek Breastfeeding Support

Even if your baby seems to be feeding well, sometimes subtle feeding issues can make things harder for you both.
Get help promptly if your baby:

  • Is fussy or unsettled during or after feeds
  • Has difficulty latching onto the breast
  • Seems to prefer feeding on one side
  • Shows signs of wind, reflux, or colic
  • Struggles to stay on the breast or falls asleep very quickly
  • You have nipple pain, cracked skin, or engorgement

These challenges can be linked to factors such as tongue tie, birth tension, or positioning. With a combination of breastfeeding support and gentle chiropractic care for babies, we can often make feeding more comfortable for both you and your baby.

Why Early Support Matters

The earlier we can address feeding challenges, the more likely you are to enjoy a smooth and confident breastfeeding journey. Many families I work with tell me they wish they had reached out sooner.

If you’re in Jersey and wondering whether your baby is getting enough breast milk, I offer home visits and clinic appointments to help with latch, feeding comfort, and baby body tension.
