Breastfeeding is a beautiful, natural process—but that doesn't always mean it comes naturally. As both a chiropractor and breastfeeding coach, I've supported countless new mothers through their breastfeeding journeys, and I've seen firsthand how the right techniques can transform struggles into success stories.
Whether you're an expectant mother preparing for your breastfeeding journey or you're already navigating the early days with your newborn, these three essential tips can make all the difference in establishing a comfortable, effective breastfeeding relationship that lasts.
1. The Chin-Deep Latch Technique
The positioning of your baby's mouth on your breast is perhaps the single most important factor in successful breastfeeding. For the perfect deep latch, remember this simple guideline: chin deep into breast, nose to nipple.
When your baby approaches your breast, aim your nipple toward the roof of their mouth. Allow their chin to press deeply into your breast first, creating the perfect angle for their mouth to open wide and take in a generous portion of the areola, not just the nipple.
This deep latch ensures that your baby can effectively extract milk while minimizing nipple pain and damage. You'll know you've achieved a good latch when your baby's lips are flanged outward (like a fish) and you can see more of your areola above their top lip than below their bottom lip.
2. The Close Wrap Technique
Proximity matters tremendously in breastfeeding. Wrap your baby around your tummy or body (depending on your chosen feeding position) as closely as possible—think "skin to skin" rather than "baby to clothes."
This close wrapping approach serves multiple purposes:
- It creates a feeling of security for your baby, mimicking the womb environment
- It reduces the physical effort needed for your baby to maintain the latch
- It enhances the skin-to-skin bonding that stimulates milk-producing hormones
- It prevents neck strain for both you and your baby
Remember, a relaxed baby who feels safe is much more likely to latch effectively and feed contentedly. Don't leave space between your bodies—bring baby to breast, not breast to baby.
3. Strategic Breast Compressions
Breast compressions are a simple yet powerful technique to optimise your newborn's feeding. This gentle manual method helps to:
- Increase milk flow during moments when your baby's sucking slows down
- Keep a sleepy baby engaged with the feeding
- Ensure complete breast drainage, which signals your body to produce more milk
- Deliver more hindmilk, the nutrient-rich milk that comes later in a feeding
To perform effective breast compressions, simply cup your breast from the chest wall with your hand (thumb on one side, fingers on the other), wait until your baby's sucking slows, then gently squeeze. Hold the compression while your baby continues actively swallowing, then release when they pause or slow again. Repeat as needed throughout the feeding session.
Your Breastfeeding Journey Matters
Remember that breastfeeding is a learned skill for both you and your baby, this takes time and lots of practice! With these three techniques—deep latching, close wrapping, and strategic compressions—you're setting yourself up for breastfeeding success.
