One of the most important steps for successful breastfeeding for both you and your baby is getting the position and latch right from the start. Good positioning helps your baby feed more effectively, ensures they get enough breastmilk, and makes the experience more comfortable for you. Poor positioning, on the other hand, can lead to nipple pain, inefficient feeding, and frustration for both mum and baby.
As a breastfeeding coach in Jersey with over 26 years’ experience, I’ve supported hundreds of new mums to achieve a more comfortable and confident feeding journey. To help remember the essentials of positioning, I use the well know acronym CHINS , a quick and easy checklist to support an effective latch and a more enjoyable breastfeeding experience.
C – Close
Keep your baby’s whole body close to you so they can feel your warmth and smell your familiar scent. Skin-to-skin contact can help you both relax, trigger oxytocin release, and support your baby’s brain development.
H – Head Free
Your baby’s head should be free to tip slightly back so they can lead with their chin as they latch. Support their neck and shoulders, not the back of their head, this helps avoid their chin tucking to their chest, which can make swallowing harder.
I – In-Line
Your baby’s head, neck, and spine should form a straight line, without twisting. Imagine trying to drink with your head turned , t’s awkward and uncomfortable for you, and it’s the same for your baby.
N – Nose to Nipple
Start with your baby’s nose level with your nipple and your baby's chin tucked into your breast. This encourages them to open their mouth wide, leading to a deeper, more comfortable latch and better milk transfer.
S – Sustainable
Make sure the position is comfortable for you too you may be feeding for a while, so choose a position you can maintain without straining your shoulders, arms, or back.
By remembering CHINS, you’ll give yourself and your baby the best chance for calm, effective, and comfortable feeding sessions.
