World Breastfeeding Week runs every year from 1–7 August, and for those of us who work with new families here in Jersey, it's one of the most important weeks in the calendar. Not because breastfeeding needs a week to validate it, but because every mum who has ever sat up at 3am wondering if she's doing it right deserves to know that she's not alone, that support exists, and that what she's doing matters enormously.
Why breastfeeding matters
Breastfeeding offers remarkable benefits for both babies and mothers. For babies, breast milk provides exactly the right nutrition at exactly the right time, it adapts as your baby grows, supports their developing immune system, and reduces the risk of infections, allergies, and longer term conditions including obesity and type 2 diabetes.
For mothers, breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, supports postnatal recovery, and plays a beautiful role in the emotional bond that develops between a mum and her newborn. It is, quite simply, one of the most powerful things a mother's body can do.
Breastfeeding isn't always easy; it is a new skill to be learnt.
Here's what World Breastfeeding Week is about: acknowledging that despite all these benefits, breastfeeding can be genuinely hard. Latch difficulties, tongue tie, sore nipples, low supply concerns, mastitis, cluster feeding, unsettled babies, conflicting advice, exhaustion, these are real challenges that real families face every day.
The barriers aren't just physical either. Social pressures, a lack of consistent information, limited workplace support for returning mothers, and a culture that doesn't always make breastfeeding in public feel comfortable , these all play a role in why many mums stop breastfeeding earlier than they'd planned. None of that is a personal failing. It is a reflection of the support available, or not available around you.
Breastfeeding support in Jersey
In Jersey we are fortunate to have a community of dedicated professionals working to make breastfeeding support accessible to every family on the island. Health Visitors, Midwives, Public Health and the Government ofJersey all play a role in providing evidence-based guidance and practical help, and World Breastfeeding Week is an opportunity to bring those efforts together and make sure every family knows where to turn.
As a Breastfeeding Coach and McTimoney Chiropractor based in Jersey, I work with pregnant women, new mums, and newborns throughout the island offering antenatal preparation, postnatal home visits, latch support, treatment for newborns experiencing tension affecting their feeding journey and comfort and remote consultations for those who prefe rit. My approach is always personal, always practical, and always without judgement.
If you're pregnant and want to feel prepared, struggling in the early days, or weeks in and finding things harder than you expected this week is a reminder that help is available and asking for it is a sign of strength, not failure.
