Common issues I can help with

Biting during breastfeeding can be a challenging issue for many mothers. Babies may bite for various reasons, including teething or boredom. During your consultation I will provide strategies for handling biting, such as watching for feeding cues and gently ending the feed if biting occurs.

Block feeding is a technique used to manage oversupply. It involves feeding your baby from one breast for a set period before switching to the other breast. During your consultation I will explain the benefits of block feeding, such as regulating milk supply and reducing engorgement, and how to implement it effectively.

Blocked Ducts: Blocked milk ducts can cause localized pain, tenderness, and swelling in the breast.

They often result from milk stasis and inadequate drainage. During your consultation I will demonstrate techniques such as warm compresses, gentle massage, and specific breastfeeding positions to clear blocked ducts effectively and prevent recurrence, ensuring a comfortable breastfeeding experience.

Your diet and nutrition play a significant role in milk production and your baby's health. I can offer dietary advice tailored to your unique needs, including recommendations for foods that support lactation and dietary changes to address specific concerns, ensuring you have the best foundation for successful breastfeeding.

Finding the right breastfeeding positions is essential for comfort and milk transfer. Together we will explore various positions, such as the cradle hold, koala hold, rugby hold, and side-lying position, to help you identify the ones that work best for you and your baby. I will ensure you have the knowledge and confidence to establish a comfortable and successful breastfeeding relationship.

Breast pumps are valuable tools for expressing breast milk. We'll discuss the different types of breast pumps available, how to choose the right one for your needs, and offer guidance on using breast pumps effectively.

Colostrum is the first milk your body produces after birth. During your consultation I will explain its importance, rich nutritional content, and how to ensure your baby receives this valuable substance during their early feeds.

Breast milk is a complex substance with numerous components that provide essential nutrition and immune support to your baby. We'll explore the composition of breast milk, including its antibodies, proteins, and fats, and how these components benefit your baby's health.

Proper storage of expressed breast milk is vital to maintain its quality and safety. I will provide guidelines on safe storage practices, including suitable storage containers, labelling, and thawing techniques, to ensure your expressed breast milk remains a valuable source of nutrition for your baby.

Mothers of twins or multiples often need tailored guidance to successfully breastfeed their babies. I will support you in establishing a manageable feeding routine, positioning techniques for tandem feeding, and strategies to ensure all your babies receive the nourishment they need, helping you navigate the challenges of breastfeeding multiples with confidence.

Breastfeeding while pregnant is possible and safe for most women. During your consultation I will provide information on the changes you may experience, such as nipple tenderness, and how to continue breastfeeding during pregnancy if desired.

Proper latching is crucial for successful breastfeeding, but many mothers and babies struggle with it. A poor latch can lead to nipple pain, inefficient milk transfer, and frustration for both mother and baby.

I assess your unique situation, provide hands-on guidance, and recommend tailored techniques to achieve a comfortable and effective latch, ensuring a successful breastfeeding journey.

Reverse pressure softening is a technique used to alleviate engorgement and facilitate latch. During your consultation I will explain how to perform reverse pressure softening to soften the areola, making it easier for your baby to latch.

Tandem nursing involves breastfeeding two children of different ages. During your consultation I will offer guidance on managing tandem nursing, including positioning techniques and ensuring both children receive the nutrition they need.

I was lucky enough to receive a voucher for a breastfeeding consultation with Penny Henderson.

Setting up the initial home visit for a convenient time was easy and straightforward. I found her advice very helpful and it was nice to have the reassurance that things were going well as you can feel unsure of yourself in the early days. Though feeding went well initially, I had a little hiccup after my initial meeting, Penny promptly replied to my whatsapp messsages with her help and advice on the situation. I also greatly appreciated the follow up support to check that things were going ok. I would recommend this service as I found it very helpful as a first time mum

I contacted Penny for help with breastfeeding originally after my son had his tongue tie cut.

I had been using breast pumps up to this point and had not been successful in getting him to latch consistently. Penny came to my home and helped with different positions and provided a lot of advice which was really helpful. He latched and fed after a few attempts which was great.

Penny is so knowledgable, encouraging and incredibly caring.

Unfortunately breast feeding has not worked out for me for various reasons. Despite this, Penny has been so supportive throughout and has followed up with me and encouraged me with my decision to exclusively pump. I would highly recommend if you are having any issues with breast feeding.

Penny came round to the house to assist with some breastfeeding support. She was very patient and had some great tips, bespoke to my situation, which really helped on a practical level, and also in terms of boosting my confidence. She was also always available to text outside of appointments. I would very much recommend her. Thank you for all your help.

Penny has been amazing in supporting me on my breastfeeding journey. Having a premature baby and as a first time mum, it has been invaluable to have someone to come to the house and also to be at the end of the phone. Really personable and made me feel much more confident. Just what I needed when my family are not close by. Thanks again!

I reached out to Penny for breastfeeding support with my 3 week old baby. As a first time mum, I wasn’t feeling confident about breastfeeding and particularly wanted advice on the latch, how to help my windy baby, and breastfeeding at home with visitors and in public when you have larger breasts. Penny was able to see me the following day and in the comfort of my own home.

I was reassured that baby’s latch was good and received lots of tips for a windy baby, breastfeeding in front of people, and the best breastfeeding positions. I am currently working through the options suggested by Penny for wind, but I immediately felt more confident about breastfeeding and fed in front of relatives and in public in the days following our meeting! It was also really helpful to receive a follow up email from Penny with everything we discussed so that I could refer back to it. Penny has so much knowledge on breastfeeding and I would highly recommend to other mums.

I saw Penny's advert on Instagram and reached out to her as my 4 week old was having difficulty latching onto the breast. She came round and watched how my son was feeding and then provided with different advice as to how I could try and get him to latch. With Penny's advice, my son managed to Latch on a few times that week.

She also noticed that he might have TT(Tongue Tie), and therefore recommended I see a specialist. She has also been answering any questions I have via WhatsApp. I cannot thank Penny enough for her help and support during this time. If you are having any Breastfeeding issues, please reach out to Penny.

I reached out to Penny on a Sunday asking for an appointment in the week but explained I was in a stew over breast feeding! She messaged me back straight away and came out that afternoon. Penny helped me with all my worries and was very re assuring. I would highly recommend her services to anyone struggling with both the emotional and physical parts of breastfeeding and having a new born in general.

After nearly 12 weeks of trying to fully breast feed my baby but having to rely daily on formula top-ups, meeting with Penny gave me the confidence to know that I wasn’t doing anything wrong and that fully breastfeeding could be possible, even so many weeks after birth.

She took and considered a detailed history of my pregnancy, labour and health since birth which then enabled her to provide me with a realistic outcome and the things I would need to do in order to increase my chances of getting there. After only two weeks of Penny’s support my baby is now fully breastfed and gaining weight happily.

We’re very grateful to have had Penny visit us at home. We finally felt like somebody was actually listening to our concerns and that she was therefore able to give us specific direction, rather than generic advice.I would highly recommend Penny. With no family on-island she has been an amazing support and listening ear when we have needed her. Thank you Penny!

I was quite emotional and worried - she got back to me straight away on a Sunday afternoon and arranged to come and see us the following day. Her emails were so reassuring and positive that I immediately felt more relaxed. It was so helpful to talk through our concerns and the challenges we were facing, and Penny gave us some really useful advice and helpful ‘tips and tricks’! I would highly recommend contacting Penny for breastfeeding support - it was exactly what I needed at the right time!
