Your Health
Your health matters just as much as your baby's during the breastfeeding journey and in my experience, mums are often the last person they think about.
I've been supporting Jersey mums through the physical and emotional demands of breastfeeding for over 25 years, and I know how quickly things like mastitis, engorgement, or emotional exhaustion can derail even the most determined feeding journey. You don't have to manage these things alone.
Common issues I can help with
Mastitis needs prompt attention. Keep feeding from the affected side, stopping feeds makes it worse, not better. Cold compresses, light lymphatic massaage, and over the counter anti-inflammatories can help alongside continuing to feed normally. If you develope a fever or feel flu-like, contact your GP as you may need antibiotics. I can support you through this during a consultation.
Yes, the hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and pressure around feeding can all take a toll. If you are finding the emotional side of breastfeeding hard, please reach out. I provide a geniunely listening ear alongside practical support, and I will always signpost you to additional help if I or you feel that you need it.
Yes! Both ends of the supply spectrum need support. Oversupply, fast letdown, engorgement and blocked ducts are all things that I regularly help with.
Blocked milk ducts can cause localized pain, tenderness, and swelling in the breast. They often result from milk stasis and inadequate drainage. During your consultation I will demonstrate techniques such as warm compresses, gentle massage, and specific breastfeeding positions to clear blocked ducts effectively and prevent recurrence, ensuring a comfortable breastfeeding experience.
Breast engorgement is a common concern, particularly in the early days of breastfeeding or when experiencing an oversupply of milk. It's characterised by painful swelling of the breasts, making latching difficult for your baby.
During your consultation I will help you manage engorgement by providing recommendations such as cold compresses, hand expression to relieve some pressure, and using a breast pump if necessary.
My goal is to ease your discomfort and establish a comfortable breastfeeding routine for you and your baby.
Nipple dermatitis can cause itching, redness, and discomfort. During your consultation I will suggest solutions for managing nipple dermatitis, including identifying potential causes, keeping the area clean and dry, and applying soothing creams or ointments.
Postpartum depression and anxiety can affect your breastfeeding journey .I can provide emotional support, coping strategies, and resources to help you navigate these emotional challenges, ensuring both your emotional and breastfeeding well-being.
Hyper lactation, or an oversupply of breast milk, can lead to challenges such as fast flow and engorgement. During your consultation we will discuss strategies for managing hyper lactation, including block feeding and ensuring a comfortable latch for your baby.
An excessive milk supply can pose its own set of challenges, including engorgement, fast milk flow, and difficulty latching for the baby. Oversupply often results from an overactive let-down reflex and overstimulation of milk production.
I will guide you through strategies to manage oversupply, such as block feeding to regulate milk flow and promoting comfortable latching positions for your baby. We'll help you find the right balance to ensure both you and your baby have a positive breastfeeding experience.
Mastitis is a painful breast infection that can leave you feeling unwell and fatigued. It typically occurs when milk ducts become blocked, leading to inflammation (inflammatory mastitis) and sometimes infection.(bacterial mastitis). I understand the urgency of addressing mastitis.
I will guide you through strategies like ice (cold compresses) to help reduce the internal swelling, light touch lymphatic massage, over the counter medication for pain relief and as an anti inflammatory, feed as normal, no pumping!
Nipple shields can be helpful for some breastfeeding issues but have pros and cons. During your consultation we will explore when nipple shields are appropriate, how to use them correctly, and potential concerns associated with their use.
Some mothers notice a temporary drop in milk supply during their menstrual cycle. I will explain the hormonal changes that can contribute to this drop and offer techniques to manage these fluctuations, such as increasing nursing sessions or incorporating lactation-supportive foods into your diet.
Thrush is a fungal infection that can affect both you and your baby during breastfeeding. Symptoms may include intense nipple pain, deep breast pain, and persistent discomfort.
I can help you identify thrush symptoms and provide guidance on treatment, including anti-fungal medications for both you and your baby, maintaining impeccable hygiene, and addressing any dietary factors that may contribute to thrush. I'm to support you in overcoming thrush and continuing your breastfeeding journey.
Vasospasm of the nipple, often associated with Raynaud's phenomenon, can cause intense nipple pain. During your consultation I will explain the symptoms, triggers, and techniques to alleviate vasospasm and manage discomfort during breastfeeding.
